One of the milestone stages in assembly of the first RITM-200 reactor plant vessel for the fifth commercial icebreaker Chukotka was completed at ZIO-Podolsk JSC (a member of Atomenergomash JSC, the machine-building division of the Rosatom State Corporation). The closure weld seam connecting two halves of the vessel was performed.

Automatic welding of the closure seam was carried out with continuous metal heating to 200 degrees for 7 days. The quantity of deposited metal wire was almost 600 kg, and the seam thickness was 150 mm. The length of the reactor plant vessel for connection of two components – flange with shell ring and the shell ring with the bottom head – was 8 meters.

Thermal treatment and mechanical processing of the reactor vessel were performed upon completion of welding; thereafter several types of the weld joint quality control were carried out.

At the same time manufacture of the second RITM-200 reactor vessel is in progress, as well as mechanical processing of the first RITM-400 reactor plant parts for the advanced first-in-class nuclear ice-breaker Russia within the framework of the 10510 Leader project.

Development of the Arctic region is of great importance for the Russian economy advancement. RITM-200 reactor plants for the new-generation first-in-class ice-breaker Arctic and commercial nuclear ships Siberia and Ural for the civil nuclear fleet of the country were shipped from the production facilities of ZIO-Podolsk JSC and installed on the ships within the period from 2016 to 2019.

The enterprises of Atomenergomash JSC provide the entire production chain for creation of RITM-200 power units – from design and production of blanks to the equipment manufacturing and installation. Afrikantov OKBM JSC, a holding member, acts as the designer and single-source manufacturer.
