A technical tour to the final disposal of classes 3 and 4 of radioactive waste near Novouralsk, Sverdlovsk region was organized by the Russia’s National operator for radioactive waste management (NO RWM) for General Director and Head of Communications of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD).

The visit to the facility took place following the signing on December 18 of the trilateral General agreement on cooperation between the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, National operator for radioactive waste management and Korea Radioactive Waste Agency. The agreement provides for the exchange of scientific and technical information, the results of research and development on the final disposal of radioactive waste.
Head of Department of “Seversky” branch Vyacheslav Aleksandrov showed the first operating final disposal in Russia, launched in 2016. Also, Korean colleagues visited the construction site of the second phase of the facility. KORAD representatives were told about the technical features of the storage facility and plans to expand its capacity.

CEO of KORAD Dr. Sung Soo Cha noted the significance of the General agreement signed on the eve between Russia and the Republic of Korea and stressed that the development of international cooperation on the issue of radioactive waste management is very important for future generations of both countries.
